Worktops are always a major consideration in the modern kitchen; it’s all about function but just as much about form. There are many choices from wood, composite, laminate to Corian but none causes more confusion than the choice between Granite and Quartz.
Whilst similar in many ways, there are considerable differences between the two, with not much price differentiation. Clients are often confused when they arrive at the Winchester Kitchens showroom and see all the beautiful stone worktops but unsure which product is right for them
It really is quite simple.
Granite is an amazing, unique, natural product. Put simply for those who missed geography, it is rock that has formed beneath the earth’s crust by magma, that has cooled under pressure. It has beautiful variations in colour, texture and veining and it has a distinctive beauty.
It is strong and hard wearing and is great for making pastry or dough, as it is cool. No two pieces the same, it is hard wearing with low porosity, but certainly not indestructible as people can mistakenly assume. It also needs acidic spills to be cleared promptly, such as lemon juice and wine. So even after a late night party a quick wipe across with a soapy cloth before you head off for beauty sleep is advised!
Available in different finishes polished, honed, antiqued or satinato, granite can look truly beautiful in any kitchen. We always advise a Winchester Kitchen client to take time to visit our supplier and select their individual slab, to ensure the natural properties shine through in all the right places.
Quartz is mined from the earth and combined with resin and pigments to create a smooth and very strong slab. It is available in a multitude of colours, patterns and finishes due to the manufacturing process ; the result is always consistent with sleek uniformity throughout.
This consistency of product means that it is not necessary to select your individual worktop. With 93% of the slab coming from natural stone it is hard wearing, non -porous and lighter than granite, it has all the much loved characters of natural stone and is highly stain resistant. You can even have a light shimmer or sparkle for interest.
