The splash back has become a feature of kitchens, almost without exception.
Whether traditional or contemporary, the majority of clients opt to have a glass splash back instead of tiles. A client came to the showroom today and was surprised to hear this. We explained that the main advantage of glass is the ability to keep painted areas clean and looking good for years to come. Often the main concern with tiles was that grouting quickly absorbed the fat and spills and looked grey and grubby, tile grout is always hard to return to its original state.
The choice of colours for your glass is endless, some clients choose to blend in with the kitchen and select more muted shades, while others decide to make a feature statement with a bold colour i.e gloss white with a vivid purple or monochrome with red. Manufacturers can now put photos and images on the glass, anything from a splash of lime green ribbon to a Manhattan skyline, the choice is endless. Suppliers can colour match to Dulux paint colours, although we always advise to choose a few shades lighter or darker – an exact match is near on impossible.
Once a kitchen is finished we recommend a client takes home a selection of glass samples and pops them onto the wall with blue tack for a few days. This enables the client to look at them in situ against their worktops and cabinetry, and to see how they look with daylight and the various overhead lighting which can really effect how the glass look under different lighting conditions. The glass is measured at the end of a job to make a template; this will take into consideration the electrical plug sockets. The glass is then ordered and fitted in the next 10-14 days, often in one continuous piece or sometimes in several pieces if they are really large.
And if after a few years you feel like updating and modernising the glass it is an easy process to remove and add a different colour, without making a huge dent in your wallet.
